School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships for Year 10 Students

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are available to Year 10 students as part of their HSC pattern of study.

The requirements outlined in the School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships in NSW 2009 Guidelines apply to all students undertaking a school based apprenticeship or traineeship.

Students in Year 10 that wish to access a school based apprenticeship or traineeship must undertake the early commencement of a Stage 6 VET course as the curriculum pathway.

Early commencement of a Stage 6 VET course means that a student in Year 10 undertakes a Stage 6 (HSC) course whilst while continuing to complete the requirements of the School Certificate. These students will commence accumulation of HSC units of credit while concurrently completing their School Certificate.

Students in Year 10 must still complete the mandatory requirements of the School Certificate, including the development of essential literacy and numeracy skills.

Participation in a school based apprenticeship or traineeship is not necessarily appropriate to all Year 10 students, it should only be undertaken if it suits the student's particular needs. The relevant school system authority will provide separate additional advice and approval for students in Year 10 wishing to undertake a school based apprenticeship or traineeship.
