Apprenticeships and Traineeships in NSW Schools

Need some incentives to help you make your decision?

Here’s some interesting $$$$$ information to consider....

To encourage participation in school based apprenticeships and traineeships the NSW and Commonwealth Governments provide a range of incentives and allowances for both employers and students. As the employer of a NSW school based apprentice or trainee you may be eligible for some of the following incentives.

Payroll Tax Exemption scheme The NSW Government provides a full exemption from payroll tax for employers in relation to apprentices and new entrant trainees.

Commencement, Completion and Recommencement Incentives Employers may be eligible for Commonwealth commencement incentives of $1,250 for school based trainees at Certificate II level. School based apprentices and trainees at Certificate III and IV levels may be eligible for both a commencement incentive of $1,500 and a completion incentive of $2,500. Recommencements at the Certificate III level may attract a $750 recommencement incentive.

Australian-school Based Apprenticeships Incentive Employers may be eligible for an additional $750 commencement incentive for employing an apprentice or trainee in an endorsed apprenticeship or traineeship at Certificate II to IV level and $750 for continuing to employ the young person after the student has completed Year 12.

Innovation Incentive The Commonwealth Government Innovation Incentive provides for an additional $1,100 incentive to be paid on commencement in an identified occupation at Certificate III level in key areas of innovation. Key areas of innovation include pharmaceutical, aircraft, electronics and chemical industries, as well as the major utilities.

Rural and Regional Skills Shortage Incentive The Declared Drought Area incentive is provided to encourage primary producers who hold an Exceptional Circumstances Drought Area Certificate to continue to offer skill development and employment opportunities in a declared drought area. The exceptional circumstances drought declared incentive provides $1,500 on commencement and $1,500 on completion. The incentive applies to Certificate II rural, agriculture and horticulture traineeships where the primary producer holds the exceptional circumstances drought declared area certificate.

Disabled Australian Apprentice Wage Support and Workplace Modifications Assistance Eligible employers who recruit an apprentice or trainee with a disability at Certificate II or III level can access additional assistance. There are two types of assistance:
- Disabled Australian Apprentice Wage Support amount of $104.30 per week on a pro rata basis for part time apprenticeships or traineeships
- Workplace Modifications costs may be reimbursed to employers up to a maximum amount of $5,000 for each apprentice or trainee.
